Are you seeing small flies around your houseplants?
Fungus Gnats (Bradysia pauper) one of the most common sciarid flies are small, 4 to 5 mm long dark brown flies with long legs and antennae. Fungus gnat larvae are slender (5 mm) with distinct black head capsules and transparent bodies. These flies are found in damp, humid environments and are commonly seen in or around houseplants. These pests feed on decaying organic matter and living materials such as roots, root hairs and stalk tissue. Fungus gnats have been known to spread detrimental mites, viruses and fungal spores to plants.
Life Cycle
The adults only live for about 10 days, but they can lay in excess of 200 eggs during that time. Adults lay eggs, which hatch into larvae in 4 to 6 days. For 12 to 14 days the larvae feed on the roots of your plants and then molt. The larvae are clear to creamy-white and can grow to about 5 mm long with shiny black head capsules. At the end of 12-14 days the larvae pupate in the soil. The pupal stage may last 4-6 days. The whole life cycle is completed within 4 to 5 weeks.
Guardian for Fungus Gnat Kit, 2 applications of our beneficial nematodes about 2 weeks apart. This kit contains yellow sticky cards with twist ties for trapping adults. NIC nematodes are isolated Canadian Strains that are reared on a live host. They are fresher, more keyed to Canadian pests, and 100% organic.
