Night Heron Chinese Fairy Bells reaches heights of 3 to 4 feet, emerging in early spring with striking burgundy-purple, bamboo-like shoots that resemble an exotic creature awakening for the new season. Its foliage appears initially with a chocolate-brown tint, gradually transitioning to a deep, glossy green as the season advances. Creamy white to greenish flowers give way to dark blue-black berries that remain through winter on this evergreen species. Exposure to more sunlight intensifies and prolongs the burgundy coloration in stems and leaves. This variety originates from Sichuan Province, China, and is part of Dan Hinkley’s collection.
