Planting Roses
-
Location: Choose a spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
-
Soil: Roses prefer well-draining, fertile soil. Amend with compost if needed.
-
Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the rose's root ball.
-
Planting: Place the rose in the hole, ensuring the bud union is slightly above the soil level.
-
Water: Water thoroughly after planting and regularly throughout the growing season.
Rose Care Tips
- Watering: Water deeply, at soil level, about once a week to encourage deep root growth.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring and again after the first bloom.
- Deadheading: Deadhead spent blooms by pinching them off where the base of the flower joins the stem. You can also remove an entire flowering head once all of the flowers within the cluster are spent.
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or diseased canes.
- Pest Control: Watch for common pests like aphids and black spot. Use organic methods if possible.
