Cercis siliquastrum, known as Judas tree, Mediterranean redbud, or love tree, is a deciduous understory tree that often develops multiple trunks and features a rounded canopy, reaching heights and widths of 15 to 25 feet. Originating from Mediterranean woodlands spanning southern Europe to western Asia, it is distinguished by its abundant pea-shaped flowers in rose-purple or purplish-pink hues, which appear on bare branches in early spring before leaf emergence. The nearly circular, heart-shaped leaves start bronze red in spring, deepen to green in summer, and transition to pale yellow or chestnut tones in autumn. Unlike C. canadensis, its leaves lack short pointed tips. Its early summer brings prominent pendant purple seed pods that often persist through winter.
